School Transportation in Saguenay: Road Closures and Safety Concerns

The Saguenay Police Service is urging motorists to exercise caution, particularly concerning school transportation routes. Recent weather conditions have led to temporary road closures, impacting travel times and raising safety concerns for students.

Recent Road Closure on Route 170

On Tuesday afternoon, Route 170 was closed for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes between the Church Road and St-Isidore Road in Laterrière due to two minor accidents. The primary cause was severely reduced visibility caused by blowing snow – a phenomenon known as ‘poudrerie’ in Quebec. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and vehicle damage was minor.

The road was initially closed around 3:00 PM and reopened at approximately 4:45 PM. Police made the decision to close the section of road to ensure the safety of all road users, according to communications agent Sophie Tremblay of the Saguenay Police Service (SPS).

Impact on School Transportation

While these accidents did not directly involve school transportation vehicles, the closures highlight the challenges posed by inclement weather. School boards and transportation providers are constantly monitoring conditions and adjusting routes as needed to prioritize student safety. Parents are encouraged to check with their children’s schools for updates on bus schedules and potential delays.
