Kona Storm Hawaii: Updates, Impacts & Safety Measures

Kona Storm Hawaii: A First Alert Weather Event

HONOLULU – The First Alert Weather Team has declared a First Alert Weather Day as a significant and powerful Kona storm tracks north of the Hawaiian Islands. This system is drawing in deep tropical moisture, resulting in widespread heavy rainfall and posing a multitude of threats across all islands. Residents are urged to prepare for an extended period of hazardous conditions through Saturday evening, with potential impacts lingering into Sunday.

What is a Kona Storm?

Kona storms are notorious for bringing unusual weather patterns to Hawaii. Unlike typical trade wind weather, Kona storms develop when a low-pressure system forms to the north or northwest of the islands, causing winds to shift to the south or southwest. This shift pulls in moisture from the tropics, leading to prolonged periods of heavy rain and potentially damaging conditions. You can learn more about Kona storms and their formation from the National Weather Service.

Current Threats & Forecast Breakdown

The current Kona storm is expected to bring a combination of significant hazards:

  • Flash Flooding: A major concern across all islands, with particularly high risk for Kauai, Oahu, Maui County, and the Big Island.
  • Damaging Winds: Southerly to southwesterly winds will be strong, with gusts capable of causing damage.
  • Strong to Severe Thunderstorms: Expect frequent thunderstorms, some of which may be severe.
  • Snow & Ice: The highest summits of the Big Island are facing the possibility of snow and ice accumulation.

Hourly Breakdown:

Today & Tonight (Friday)

Kauai and Oahu are currently experiencing a line of thunderstorms with continued threats of dangerous winds, heavy rain, and flooding. The main band of showers is shifting eastward, settling over Maui County and the Big Island. Flash flood threats will persist for Kauai through this afternoon and Oahu tonight.

Saturday

Thunderstorms will be widespread across the eastern half of the state. The initial band of thunderstorms may stall over eastern Maui Saturday afternoon and evening. Hawaii Island is expected to see scattered thunderstorms, alongside strong south winds. Current models indicate higher rainfall totals for the Kona side of the Big Island, making this area particularly vulnerable.

Sunday & Beyond

Thunderstorms will continue overnight, potentially remaining between Maui and Hawaii Island, exacerbating the flooding risk. While the flooding threat will decrease for Kauai and Oahu on Sunday, saturated ground means even minimal rainfall could trigger quick runoff and flash flooding. Maui County and Hawaii Island can still expect flash flooding and breezy southwest winds, potentially extending into Monday for the Big Island.
