Kamiyah Mobley: A Story of Loss, Hope, and Reunion

In 1998, Shanara Mobley and Craig Aiken welcomed their first daughter, Kamiyah Mobley, into the world. Their joy was tragically cut short just hours after her birth when Kamiyah was kidnapped from a Jacksonville, Florida hospital by a woman posing as a nurse. For eighteen long years, Shanara and Craig lived with the agonizing uncertainty of not knowing their child’s fate, clinging to the hope of a reunion that seemed increasingly distant.

The Shocking Abduction

Shanara Mobley was just 16 years old when she gave birth to Kamiyah on July 10, 1998, at University Medical Center. Craig Aiken was incarcerated at the time and unable to be present. After only eight hours with her newborn, Shanara entrusted her baby to a woman claiming to be a nurse who said she needed to check Kamiyah’s temperature. This seemingly routine request turned into a nightmare when the woman vanished with the baby. The hospital’s security failures led to a lawsuit filed by Shanara, which was settled for approximately $1.25–$1.5 million in 2001, with a lump sum of around $437,000 received in 2002.

Years of Searching and a Family Grows

Despite the devastating loss, Shanara and Craig never gave up searching for Kamiyah. They expanded their family, welcoming children LaShawnye, Christopher Barnes, Chrisanna Barnes, Savannah Mobley, Journye Barnes, and Craivon Aiken (Craig’s son). However, the void left by Kamiyah’s absence remained a constant ache.

The Breakthrough in 2017

In 2016, Craig received a life-altering phone call from a young woman identifying herself as Kamiyah. She had been living in Walterboro, South Carolina, under the name Alexis Kelli Manigo and had recently discovered the truth about her birth and her upbringing by Gloria Williams. Kamiyah, torn between her loyalty to Gloria and the revelation of her true identity, initially kept the information secret. A FaceTime call with Craig led to a heart-wrenching reunion at a police station in January 2017, after Gloria Williams was arrested on kidnapping charges.

A Complex Reunion

The reunion was joyous, but far from simple. Shanara and Craig were surprised by the strong bond Kamiyah still felt towards Gloria Williams, whom she considered her mother. This created tension and emotional challenges for everyone involved. During Gloria Williams’ sentencing in 2018, Shanara and Craig pleaded for the maximum punishment, expressing the years of pain and frustration caused by the kidnapping and Kamiyah’s continued support for her abductor.

Navigating a New Reality

The family’s story was featured on the reality TV series ‘Iyanla: Fix My Life’ on the Oprah Winfrey Network, though Craig later expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal of his relationship with Kamiyah. In late 2019, Kamiyah moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to be closer to her biological family, but rebuilding their relationship with Shanara took time and patience.

Tragedy and Resilience

The family faced further heartbreak in March 2023 with the tragic death of Craig’s youngest son, Craivon Aiken. Craig channeled his experiences into his 2023 book, ‘Self Therapy,’ detailing the kidnapping, its aftermath, and the unfair media scrutiny he faced during his incarceration. He and Shanara have consistently opposed appeals filed by Gloria Williams, advocating for her continued imprisonment.

A Family United

Today, Shanara, Craig, and Kamiyah live in Jacksonville, Florida, and are working to strengthen their bond. Kamiyah’s resemblance to her father is often noted, and her relationship with Shanara continues to improve. Craig remains dedicated to providing emotional support to his daughter, recognizing the lasting impact of her traumatic experience. The Mobley family’s story is a testament to the enduring power of hope, resilience, and the unwavering love of a family reunited against all odds.
