Iowa Braces for Active Weather: Severe Storms on the Horizon

Iowa residents should prepare for a week of active weather, with multiple opportunities for severe thunderstorms. Here’s a detailed look at what to expect, and how to stay safe.

Current Situation: Tornado Watch & Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

As of Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for much of central and eastern Iowa, extending until 10 p.m. This includes Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Chickasaw, Clayton, Clinton, Dallas, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Howard, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Linn, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Muscatine, Polk, Poweshiek, Scott, Story, Tama, Warren, Washington and Winneshiek counties. A severe thunderstorm warning was also in effect for parts of Hardin, Franklin, Grundy and Butler counties until 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, with reports of 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail.

What’s Driving the Storms?

A stalled front cutting across the state is the primary catalyst for storm development. South of this boundary, temperatures are soaring into the mid-80s with high humidity, creating a volatile atmosphere ripe for severe weather. Storms are expected to begin forming between 2 and 4 p.m. near and east of Interstate 35.

Potential Hazards

  • Very Large Hail: The potential for hail up to 3 inches in diameter exists, particularly in eastern Iowa.
  • Damaging Winds: Storms could produce winds exceeding 60 mph.
  • Tornado Risk: An intense tornado is possible if conditions align favorably.
  • Heavy Rainfall: Localized flooding is possible with heavier downpours.

While the exact number of storms that will develop remains uncertain, any storms that do form could be particularly intense. Pay close attention to local weather updates and warnings.

Looking Ahead: Wednesday’s Forecast

The threat of severe weather continues into Wednesday. A low chance of morning storms gives way to another round of strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening. The position of the stalled front, influenced by Tuesday’s storms, will determine the extent and severity of Wednesday’s weather. While the potential for damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes remains, it’s also possible that central Iowa could avoid the worst of the storms.
