Doug Ford’s Controversial Remarks on Home Invasion Shooting

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has ignited a firestorm of discussion with his outspoken reaction to a recent home invasion in Vaughan, Ontario. The Premier offered strong words of support – and even encouragement – for a resident who shot an intruder, stating he believed the homeowner should have fired additional shots.

Ford’s Comments Spark Debate

“As for the person that was defending his family, he was a legal gun owner, stored properly — congratulations. Yeah, I’m glad you shot the guy. Teach the rest of these robbers,” Ford declared at a news conference on Wednesday, responding to questions about the incident. He further emphasized his stance, stating, “These guys, they need to be shot, as far as I’m concerned. They’re coming through the front door to hurt your family.”

The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when York Regional Police (YRP) responded to reports of shots fired at a home in Vaughan. Surveillance footage released by YRP depicts three suspects, at least one armed, forcibly entering the residence. The homeowner, lawfully possessing and storing a firearm, discharged it at the intruders, who then fled the scene. One suspect later arrived at a Greater Toronto Area (GTA) hospital with a gunshot wound.

No Charges for Homeowner

Police have confirmed they will not be laying charges against the homeowner. Ford reiterated his support, adding, “Congratulations for shooting this guy; should have shot him a couple more times, as far as I’m concerned.” He expressed outrage at the perceived leniency within the justice system, arguing that “ruthless” criminals who endanger families “need to rot in jail for the rest of their lives.” He criticized what he described as “weak-kneed judges” who grant bail to repeat offenders.

“We have some great judges, but we have some really weak-kneed judges letting these criminals out on bail, not once, not twice, four or five times. ‘Okay, Johnny, go out and break into the next house.’ They’re violent criminals, and we’re going to hold them to account.”

Calls for Bail Reform

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca echoed concerns about the bail system, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the incident highlights its flaws. “No one should ever be put in that position, and I am thankful that the homeowner has not been charged, as this was an act of self-defence,” Del Duca wrote. He called for “urgent” bail reform from the federal government. See his statement on X

Suspect Identified and in Custody

Police have identified the suspect who was shot as 24-year-old Trestin Cassanova-Alman, currently in hospital in stable condition. He faces charges of robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, and breach of probation. Cassanova-Alman was already wanted by multiple agencies for numerous violent offences and was linked to ‘Project Wrangler,’ an operation targeting a violent criminal group operating in Ontario and Quebec.
