College Student Missing in Barcelona: James ‘Jimmy’ Gracey Found Dead
The vibrant nightlife of Barcelona became the backdrop for a tragic event as James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, was found dead after being reported missing earlier this week. The case, which sparked an anxious search involving family, friends, and local authorities, has concluded with heartbreaking results.
Last Seen at a Barcelona Nightclub
Those who last saw Jimmy Gracey at the Shoko nightclub in Barcelona recall a young man whose curls were illuminated by the club’s lights, and the glint of a rhinestone cross he wore. Gracey became separated from his friends while clubbing early Tuesday morning and was last seen alive around 3 a.m., according to relatives.
The Search and Discovery
In the days following his disappearance, a desperate search unfolded. Gracey’s father travelled to Barcelona, joining city police in patrolling the streets and scanning the nearby beaches for any sign of the missing student. The Catalan police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, utilized motorcycles and underwater units in their search efforts near Port Olímpic, a popular beachfront area known for its nightlife.
Unfortunately, the search ended on Thursday when Gracey’s body was discovered in the shallow ocean water in front of the club. Barcelona police have confirmed his death.
Initial Findings and Investigation
Investigators currently believe the death was accidental, though the exact cause and circumstances remain unclear. An autopsy is being performed, with initial findings expected within two to three days, and a final report – including laboratory results – anticipated in several weeks. Police recovered Gracey’s phone, which had been stolen, according to his mother, Therese Gracey, who shared the information on Facebook.
Who Was James ‘Jimmy’ Gracey?
Gracey, originally from Illinois, was a junior at the University of Alabama, just one month away from completing his academic year. He had travelled to Barcelona to spend spring break visiting classmates studying abroad. He arrived in Barcelona on Monday after spending the weekend in Amsterdam.
Friends described Gracey as a responsible and family-oriented young man. He was a beloved member of the Theta Chi fraternity, serving as chaplain and philanthropy chairman. He was also an avid hockey player and an honors student in the university’s accounting program.
A Community Mourns
“Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus,” the University of Alabama stated. The university is providing support to Gracey’s family, friends, and the wider campus community.
The Gracey family expressed their heartbreak in a statement, describing Jimmy as a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend. His uncle, David Gracey, a CNN senior producer, highlighted Jimmy’s role as the eldest of five children and his dedication to caring for his siblings.
