Alarm Triggers Evacuation at NCC Residence Hall – Smoke from Washing Machine

Alarm Activation at NCC Residence Hall: Smoke from Washing Machine

Sheldon, Iowa – On Thursday night, Sheldon firefighters responded to a smoke alarm activation at Sioux Hall, a residence hall at Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC). The call came in shortly before 11:00 p.m., prompting a rapid response from the Sheldon Fire Department.

What Happened?

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered smoke emanating from the hallway and concentrated in the laundry area. Investigation quickly revealed the source: a burned belt on a washing machine. The friction and heat generated by the damaged belt created the smoke, triggering the building’s alarm system.

“Our crews quickly located the source of the smoke and determined it was a mechanical issue with a washing machine,” stated Fire Chief Brad Hindt. “Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the damage was limited to the appliance itself.”

Swift Resolution

Firefighters efficiently ventilated the affected area to clear the smoke. The situation was brought under control within approximately half an hour, allowing crews to return to the fire station. The incident highlights the importance of functioning smoke alarms in protecting residents and quickly alerting emergency services.
