Drama on Mount Herzl: Seating Disputes Mar Yom HaAtzmaut Ceremony

The annual torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem is traditionally a moment of unity and reflection. However, the celebrations for the 78th Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day) were marked by unexpected tension involving high-ranking government officials.

In a surprising turn of events, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and his wife, Ayala, abruptly exited the ceremony. The cause? A seating dispute. Reports indicate that Ben-Gvir had occupied a seat specifically reserved for the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, who was one of the honored torch-bearers of the evening.

According to event organizers, Ben-Gvir had his own designated seating in the “distinguished gallery,” but rather than relocating, the Minister chose to leave the event entirely. This was not the only friction of the night; MK Tally Gotliv was also captured on video in a heated confrontation with staff after discovering she did not have a reserved seat in that section.

A Celebration of “Strengths of Renewal”

Despite the diplomatic friction, the core of the event remained focused on the theme “Strengths of Renewal.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accompanied by his wife Sara, stood alongside President Javier Milei to kick off the national festivities.

The ceremony highlighted a diverse group of individuals chosen to carry the torch, symbolizing the resilience of the nation. This year’s torch-bearers included:

    n

  • Brig. Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch – Coordinator for the Hostages and Missing.
  • Gili Raanan – Renowned entrepreneur.
  • Assaf Granit – Celebrated chef.
  • Moshe Edri – Influential filmmaker.

Blending Technology and Remembrance

The event was a powerful mix of military pride and emotional tribute. A standout moment featured a performance by singer Yoram Gaon, integrated with a sophisticated mockup of an IDF war room. The audience was treated to a reveal of Israel’s cutting-edge Iron Beam laser defense system, which eventually opened to reveal a DJ—one of the organizers of the Nova Festival—bringing a poignant reminder of the lives affected by recent conflicts.

The ceremony concluded on a deeply emotional note as wounded IDF soldiers and their families were welcomed to the stage, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and the enduring hope that defines Yom HaAtzmaut.
