Published: February 16, 2026 at 3:45PM EST – Toronto and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTA) are bracing for another substantial snowfall this week, as Environment Canada issues crucial weather advisories across the region. Residents are urged to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

Snow Storm Watch Issued for the GTA

Environment Canada has issued a yellow watch for municipalities north of Vaughan, west of Milton, and east of Scarborough. Most of the GTA are currently under a special weather statement. This indicates a high probability of significant weather events impacting travel and daily life. The core of the system, a low-pressure front, is expected to bring a mix of snow and freezing rain beginning Wednesday.

“There remains some uncertainty with the track of this system, as such, snowfall amounts and areas affected could change,” states Environment Canada. This highlights the dynamic nature of the forecast and the importance of staying updated with the latest information.

Snowfall Amounts & Potential Impacts

The snowfall is anticipated to begin Wednesday morning. Areas like Richmond Hill and Markham could see accumulations of up to 15 centimetres. Toronto and Hamilton may experience between 2 to 5 centimetres of snow. However, the threat doesn’t end with snow. “Several hours of freezing rain with ice build-up of two to five millimetres (is) possible,” the advisory warns, creating a significant risk of slippery and dangerous conditions.

Roads and sidewalks are expected to become treacherous, making travel difficult. Environment Canada strongly advises residents to allow for extra travel time and to be prepared for drastically reduced visibility, potentially dropping to near zero at times during the day. This is particularly important for commuters and those with essential travel plans.

Looking Ahead: Weather Forecast Beyond Wednesday

The challenging weather conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday evening. A brief respite is forecast for Thursday, with cloudy skies and a high of 1°C. However, don’t pack away the winter gear just yet! Environment Canada predicts a 70 per cent chance of rain or snow on Friday, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries continuing into Saturday.
