Toronto Weather Update: Prepare for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding
As of April 13, 2026, residents of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are advised to prepare for significant rainfall. Both Environment Canada and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) are forecasting substantial precipitation, leading to a flood outlook being issued for the region.
Rainfall Forecast for Toronto
Environment Canada predicts between 15 to 25 millimetres of rain will begin early Tuesday morning and continue throughout the afternoon. The TRCA anticipates up to 25 millimetres of rainfall across the GTA. This substantial amount of precipitation has prompted the TRCA to issue a flood outlook, effective until Wednesday evening.
Flood Outlook and Safety Precautions
The TRCA warns that the combination of widespread rain and the potential for thunderstorms significantly increases the risk of flooding. Rivers and streams may overflow due to the rapid influx of water. “All shorelines, rivers, and streams in TRCA jurisdiction should be considered dangerous as this rainfall may cause rapidly changing water levels and stronger and faster flows in TRCA rivers,” the authority stated in a recent notice.
Ground conditions are already saturated, having received 3-9 mm of rainfall in the past 48 hours. This reduces the ground’s ability to absorb further water, exacerbating the flood risk. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution near bodies of water.
Temperature Outlook
Despite the rainy conditions, Tuesday will be relatively warm, with a high of 21°C. Wednesday and Thursday will see continued rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures, with daytime highs around 18°C. The chance of showers decreases somewhat on Friday, with a 30 per cent probability of precipitation throughout the day.
