According to Jeffrey Gallant, Scientific Director of the Quebec Shark Observatory, this event is an outlier, but it serves as a critical reminder of the inherent risks associated with ocean activities. To understand why this happened, we must look at the behavior of the grand requin blanc (Great White Shark) and its current patterns in Canada.
Why Do Attacks Happen? The Role of Juvenile Sharks
One of the most surprising revelations from the expert is that many of the sharks currently frequenting the Gulf are juveniles. Unlike seasoned adults, young Great Whites are still refining their hunting skills and visual acuity. This leads to a few risky behaviors:

Many ocean enthusiasts use platforms like OCEARCH to track shark movements. While these tools are incredible for science and general awareness, Gallant warns against a “false sense of security.”
For every shark tagged and tracked via satellite, there are potentially 10 to 20 others that remain invisible to the app. Technology is a great guide, but it cannot replace situational awareness and respect for the ocean’s unpredictability.
