Sydney Gripped by Escalating Gang Violence: High-Speed Chases and Targeted Shootings
Sydney is currently experiencing a disturbing escalation in gang-related violence, with recent incidents including brazen shootings, high-speed police chases, and arson attacks. Authorities are working tirelessly to quell the unrest and bring those responsible to justice.
‘Kill Car’ and Dramatic Police Chase
The situation reached a critical point over the weekend with a dramatic pursuit involving a stolen white Audi, dubbed a “kill car” by local media. On Saturday afternoon, the NSW Police Raptor Squad spotted the vehicle on the Great Western Highway in Wentworthville. Concerned citizens had alerted police to a group of men wearing balaclavas seen sitting inside the car near a local leagues club.
When officers attempted to stop the Audi, the driver allegedly accelerated away, throwing fuel jerry cans and containers of bleach at pursuing police. A Raptor Squad vehicle intentionally rammed the Audi, bringing it to a halt on the M4 motorway near Silverwater. A subsequent foot chase led to the arrest of three men.
Inside the vehicle, police discovered a loaded semi-automatic rifle, a pistol, and cloned number plates. Ethan Mclaws and Chayce Jensen, both 24, have been charged with weapons and criminal group offenses. The alleged driver, Dean Saunders, 28, faces additional charges related to driving and the stolen vehicle. Saunders was already wanted for domestic violence and assault.
Linked to Previous Attacks in Sydney’s Southwest
Police believe the stolen Audi was used in a series of shootings and arson attacks across Sydney’s southwest, including incidents in Panania. A home on Tyalgum Avenue in Panania was targeted multiple times in recent weeks, with security footage showing a gunman firing at the property. Another home in Panania was firebombed, and a gun was brandished but not used.
“We believe the vehicle was also linked to three other shooting offences that occurred on the same night in St Johns Park, Colyton, and again, at the same Panania address,” Detective Inspector Brad Abdy stated.
Continued Violence: Overnight Shootings in Punchbowl and Greenacre
The violence continued into Sunday morning, with reports of shootings at homes in Punchbowl and Greenacre. Shots were fired at a residence on Columbine Avenue in Punchbowl, followed shortly after by gunfire at a home on Noble Avenue in Greenacre. Fortunately, no one was injured in either incident. Police believe these two shootings are connected and are actively pursuing the gunmen.
Escalation of Gang Warfare
These recent events are believed to be linked to ongoing conflicts between rival gangs vying for control of the drug trade and engaging in retaliatory attacks. The current unrest echoes a wave of violence in February, stemming from a falling out between the Coconut Cartel and the Alameddine crime families. That earlier conflict began with the shooting of former NRL star Matt Utai and resulted in numerous arson and shooting incidents across Sydney’s southwest. While police have not yet confirmed a direct link between the current violence and the February incidents, investigations are ongoing.
The situation remains fluid, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. For more information on crime prevention and safety, visit the New South Wales Police Force website.
