High-Ranking Sûreté du Québec Commander Suspended Following Serious Allegations

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Canada’s provincial police force, has announced the temporary suspension of Patrick Paquet, a high-ranking official who served as the commander for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean/Côte-Nord region. The decision comes in the wake of allegations that, while not yet publicly detailed, have been described by the organization as “serious.”

In a statement, Captain Benoit Richard, head of media relations for the SQ, emphasized the gravity of the situation and the organization’s commitment to transparency and integrity.

“We cannot comment on the specific nature of the allegations regarding the individual in question. However, these are serious allegations. It is extremely important for us, as an organization, to act with diligence in these situations,” stated Captain Richard.

The Investigation Process: Ensuring Police Integrity

The investigation into Patrick Paquet’s conduct is being handled by the Service des normes policières (Police Standards Service) of the Sûreté du Québec. This specialized unit is tasked with critical oversight duties, including:

    n

  • Monitoring Compliance: Ensuring all officers adhere strictly to the professional code of ethics.
  • Internal Probes: Conducting thorough investigations into misconduct allegations.
  • Public Accountability: Processing and resolving complaints filed by the public against active officers.

It is important to note that the suspension is temporary. The SQ general direction has clarified that Paquet’s employment contract has not been revoked. Should the investigation find the allegations to be unfounded, there is a possibility that he may be reinstated to his position.

A Rapid Rise in Leadership

The suspension is particularly surprising given Mr. Paquet’s recent career trajectory. In May 2024, he was promoted to the role of commander for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean/Côte-Nord region, an appointment officialized by the Director General of the Sûreté du Québec, Johanne Beausoleil.

Prior to this prestigious promotion, Paquet had a established track record within the force, having served as the post director for the MRC du Domaine-du-Roy since July 2016. His leadership in that region spanned several years before his move to the regional command.

What Happens Next?

While the public and the police force await clarity, the timeline for the resolution of this case remains uncertain. Captain Benoit Richard warned that the investigation could take a varying amount of time depending on the complexity of the evidence.

“We cannot say with certainty how long the investigation will take. It could be a few days, a few weeks, or in some cases, it could even take a few years,” Richard concluded.

As the Sûreté du Québec continues its internal review, this case highlights the stringent standards expected of law enforcement leadership in Canada and the rigorous processes in place to maintain public trust in the justice system.
