Summer Arrives Early: Quebec Braces for Unexpected Heat Wave this National Patriots’ Day

If you thought the mild spring weather was here to stay, think again. Quebec is about to experience a dramatic shift as summer-like conditions make an early appearance. Starting this Monday, coinciding with National Patriots’ Day, residents across the province will feel a significant surge in both temperature and humidity.

The Heat is On: What to Expect

A powerful warm front migrating from Colorado is pushing its way into the region, bringing temperatures that far exceed the seasonal norms for mid-May. While we aren’t quite breaking all-time records, the air will certainly feel tropical.

Here is the breakdown of the expected temperatures for the start of the week:

    n

  • Monday: Highs of 29°C with a humidex reaching 34.
  • Tuesday: The peak of the heat wave, with temperatures hitting 31°C and a humidex of 35.

According to Marilyn Ferland, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), while these numbers are high, they remain just below the historical records for these dates (32.2°C for May 18 and 33.9°C for May 19).

Storms and Rain: The Flip Side of the Heat

Unfortunately, this warmth doesn’t come without a price. The warm front is expected to trigger instability in the atmosphere, leading to potential precipitation and thunderstorms across the province.

Regional Precipitation Forecast:

  • Montreal: Expect between 5 to 10 mm of rain, with higher amounts possible if thunderstorms develop.
  • Quebec City: Likely to see over 10 mm of rainfall.
  • Eastern Quebec (Côte-Nord & Gaspésie): The heaviest rain is expected from Tuesday night into Wednesday, with accumulations ranging between 30 to 40 mm.

When Will It Cool Down?

If you aren’t a fan of the humidity, there is good news. The system causing this temperature spike will begin to exit the southern and western parts of the province starting Wednesday, moving toward the east.

In Montreal, Wednesday will remain warm at around 32°C, but a sharp drop is expected by Thursday, with temperatures falling to 17°C. By the end of the week, the weather should stabilize around a comfortable 20°C with mostly sunny skies and only rare chances of rain.

Stay hydrated, keep an eye on the local radar, and enjoy the early taste of summer!
