Severe Weather Alert: North Carolina Braces for Potential Tornadoes and Damaging Storms

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina officials are strongly urging residents across the state to prepare for potentially severe weather conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a rare Level 4 Moderate Risk alert for several parts of the state, signaling a heightened threat of dangerous storms.

The WECT First Alert Weather Team warns that the primary hazards associated with this system include damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes. These conditions pose a significant risk to life and property, and proactive preparation is crucial.

State of Emergency Preparedness

On Sunday, March 15th, the North Carolina Emergency Management activated its State Emergency Response Team and allocated resources in anticipation of the severe weather impacts expected on Monday, March 16th. This proactive measure underscores the seriousness of the situation.

“While North Carolina is accustomed to experiencing severe weather, the issuance of a Level 4 out of 5 moderate threat is exceptionally rare within our state,” stated NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray. “It is imperative that all North Carolinians develop a comprehensive plan to protect themselves and their families and remain informed to take swift action when necessary.”

Governor Josh Stein echoed this sentiment, urging residents to take immediate steps to ensure their safety. “Please ensure that emergency alerts are enabled on your mobile devices and formulate a plan for safeguarding yourself and your loved ones,” Governor Stein advised.

Regional Risk Variations & Safety Measures

The severity of the weather risk varies across different regions of North Carolina. Regardless of location, officials emphasize the importance of having a designated safe room or shelter in place for situations involving a tornado warning. Here’s a breakdown of essential safety measures:

  • Enable Emergency Alerts: Ensure your cell phone is set to receive emergency alerts from local authorities.
  • Monitor Local News: Stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings through trusted local news sources.
  • Follow Official Updates: Regularly check for updates from the National Weather Service (https://www.weather.gov/) and your local emergency management offices.
  • Have a Plan: Discuss and practice a family emergency plan, including a designated meeting point.
