Severe Montreal Weather Forces Cancellation of Tour la Nuit Cycling Event
The excitement was palpable as cyclists gathered at the start line, ready to conquer the city streets. However, the unpredictability of the weather in Montreal took center stage this past Friday night, leading to the sudden and disappointing cancellation of the Tour la Nuit, one of the city’s most anticipated annual cycling celebrations.
Safety First: Why the Event Was Called Off
Despite a coordinated effort between Vélo Québec, the City of Montreal, and the Montreal Police Service, the conditions became too hazardous to proceed. The decision was not made lightly; organizers worked until the final moments to find a viable alternative to keep the 20-kilometre ride on track.
The turning point came shortly after 8 p.m. when Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Montreal area. The forecast quickly became a reality as the city experienced:
- n
- Brief but intense bursts of heavy rainfall.
- Small hail that posed a risk to riders.
- Reduced visibility and slippery road conditions.

“The safety of participants remains our top priority,” Vélo Québec stated, emphasizing that guaranteeing optimal safety conditions was impossible given the volatility of the storm.
The Impacted Route
The Tour la Nuit was designed to showcase the beauty of the city at night, starting at Jarry Park. The planned route would have taken participants through several key Montreal boroughs, including:
- n
- Ahuntsic-Cartierville
- St-Laurent
- Villeray–St-Michel–Parc-Extension

Good News for Registered Cyclists
While the Friday night ride was cancelled, the spirit of cycling in the city remains alive. To make up for the disappointment, Vélo Québec has announced a generous alternative for all registered participants.
Cyclists who were signed up for the Tour la Nuit are invited to participate in the Tour de l’Île, scheduled for Sunday. Participants can simply use their original Tour la Nuit bib numbers to gain entry, ensuring that the passion for two-wheeled exploration isn’t dampened by a bit of rain.
For those planning future outdoor activities, staying updated on the latest Montreal weather alerts is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in the metropolis.
