Hawaii School Closures: Severe Weather Impacts Schedules

HONOLULU, HI – March 13, 2024 – A powerful storm system is impacting the Hawaiian Islands, leading to widespread school closures across the state. This announcement affects public and private institutions, as well as the University of Hawaii system. Here’s a comprehensive update on the current situation.

Public School Closures

The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) has announced the closure of all public schools on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui County (Maui, Molokai, and Lānaʻi), and Hawaii Island for Friday, March 13th. This decision was made in anticipation of severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, and high winds.

What this means:

  • No in-person instruction will take place.
  • All extracurricular activities are canceled.
  • Students and staff are not required to report to campuses or HIDOE offices unless specifically directed by school administration.

Fortunately, this closure coincides with the upcoming spring break for students and teachers statewide, scheduled from March 16th to 20th. This will minimize disruption to the academic calendar.

University of Hawaii Closures

All University of Hawaii (UH) campuses across the state will also be closed on Friday, March 13th, due to the impending severe weather. This includes all scheduled classes and events.

Impacted Events:

  • OUTRIGGER Invitational men’s volleyball tournament
  • Rainbow Wahine softball game at UH Mānoa

Chaminade University Closure

Chaminade University has announced a campus closure for Friday, March 13th, due to the hazardous weather conditions. Campus offices are currently scheduled to reopen on Monday, March 16th, pending further notice from school officials.

Staying Informed

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service.
