Scarlet Lady Banned: Why Turkey Denied Entry to This Star-Studded LGBTQ+ Cruise

In a move that has sparked international outrage, the Scarlet Lady, a luxury vessel operated by Virgin Voyages, was recently blocked from docking in Kuşadası, Turkey. The ship was carrying approximately 2,000 LGBTQ+ passengers and the legendary Broadway icon Patti LuPone, as part of an “epic all-gay voyage” organized by the US-based company Atlantis.

A Clash of Values: The Reason for the Ban

The decision to bar the Scarlet Lady from entering Turkish waters was not a matter of logistics or safety, but one of ideology. Authorities in Turkey’s Aydin province released a startling statement claiming that the cruise was chartered by groups whose behaviours “do not align with the structure of our society and our moral values.”

The official statement further noted that the arrival of the ship had been cancelled because it “sparked significant public concern,” leaving no room for the group to visit the province for an event of this nature.

Patti LuPone and Atlantis Events Express Shock

The news left those on board stunned, including Tony Award winner Patti LuPone. Taking to Instagram, the 77-year-old performer expressed her fury over the discriminatory treatment.

“A ship – a magnificent ship – full of gay men. And me. Denied entry to Turkey simply because of who is on board. I am furious,” LuPone shared with her followers.

Despite the setback, LuPone remained defiant, stating her readiness to perform for the passengers who, in her words, “deserve so much better than this.”

Rich Campbell, President and CEO of Atlantis Events, told CNN that in the company’s 36-year history, this is the first time they have been explicitly told they could not berth because of their identity. Campbell emphasized that the cruise was not a political rally or a pride march, but a vacation that had been advertised a year in advance.

A Pattern of LGBTQ+ Discrimination in Turkey

While homosexuality is not technically criminalized in Turkey, the reality on the ground is far different. Homophobia remains widespread, often fueled by rhetoric from the highest levels of government. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has frequently targeted the LGBTQ+ community, describing them as a threat to traditional family values.

This incident is not an isolated case. Key points regarding LGBTQ+ rights in Turkey include:

  • Pride Bans: Istanbul Pride, once a massive celebration, has been systematically banned by the conservative government since 2015.
  • Historical Precedent: In 2000, over 800 gay tourists were prevented from entering Kuşadası, showing a long-standing pattern of discrimination against LGBTQ+ travelers.

What Happens Now for the Scarlet Lady?

With the Turkish ports of Kuşadası and Istanbul now off-limits, the Scarlet Lady has adjusted its itinerary. To ensure the passengers still have a world-class experience, the ship will now make stops in Cairo and Crete instead.

As global travel continues to evolve, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges LGBTQ+ travelers still face in certain regions.
