Faster Commutes are Coming: The Scarborough Busway Officially Launches September 30

For thousands of commuters in Toronto, the daily grind is about to get a lot smoother. The Scarborough Busway is officially set to open on September 30, promising to slash travel times and provide a reliable alternative for those navigating the eastern part of the city. In a significant win for public transit, riders can expect to save over an hour of commuting time every single week.

What is the Scarborough Busway?

The new four-kilometre transit corridor is strategically designed to bridge the gap in Toronto’s transit network. It will operate between Kennedy and Ellesmere stations, seamlessly connecting to the Scarborough Town Centre via priority bus infrastructure along Ellesmere Road.

According to city officials, the impact will be immediate:

    n

  • Increased Capacity: The busway is expected to handle more than 118,000 riders.
  • Rapid Transit: Trips between Kennedy and Scarborough Town Centre are projected to take just 15 minutes.
  • Reduced Traffic: By moving more people efficiently, the project aims to ease overall road congestion.

“Investing in public transit is a win-win situation; not only will this speed up TTC commuters, but it will help ease congestion for everybody,” stated Mayor Olivia Chow.

A Vital Bridge to the Future Subway Extension

While the Scarborough Busway provides immediate relief, it is part of a larger strategic plan. This infrastructure serves as the primary solution until the highly anticipated Scarborough subway extension is completed. The long-term project will extend Line 2 Bloor-Danforth to McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue East, though it is not expected to be operational until 2030.

The transition to a busway follows the unfortunate derailment of the Line 3 Scarborough RT in July 2023, which forced the early closure of the aging corridor. Since then, the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has been working tirelessly to implement a replacement plan that meets the needs of the community.

What to Expect in the Coming Weeks

To ensure a seamless launch, the TTC will begin rigorous testing of the Busway in early September. This phase is crucial for identifying and correcting any operational hurdles before the general public begins using the service at the end of the month.

Key operational highlights include:

  • Multiple Routes: Eight different TTC bus routes will utilize the Busway to provide frequent express service.
  • Demand Management: The express service is designed to match the high passenger volume previously handled by the old Line 3.
  • Infrastructure Cleanup: Once the Busway is live, the temporary RT replacement bus lanes on Kennedy Road and Midland Road will be removed to restore normal traffic flow.

TTC Chair Jamaal Myers emphasized that residents deserve high-quality, reliable service, and the Busway is a critical step in enhancing the city’s transit landscape. For more information on route changes and schedules, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Toronto official website.
