Royal Air Maroc: Summer Flight Adjustments and Strategic African Expansion

Royal Air Maroc Adjusts Summer Schedule: European Route Cuts and African Expansion
Traveling to North Africa this summer? If you are planning a trip with Royal Air Maroc, it is important to stay updated on the latest schedule changes. As the peak summer season kicks off, the airline has announced a strategic shift in its operations, resulting in the suspension and reduction of several European routes.
Why is Royal Air Maroc Reducing European Flights?
While it is common for airlines to adjust schedules during the summer due to fluctuating leisure demand, this year’s reductions are more significant. The primary driver behind these changes is the soaring price of aviation fuel (oil), which has forced the Moroccan carrier to optimize its network to maintain efficiency.
Affected Routes in Europe
France and Morocco connections are seeing the most impact, particularly flights connecting French regional hubs to the vibrant city of Marrakech. Between early July and mid-September, flights from the following cities will be temporarily removed from the timetable:
- n
- Bordeaux
- Lyon
- Marseille
- Nantes
- Toulouse
Additionally, the Brussels-Marrakech route is also affected. For those flying via Casablanca, frequency reductions are in place for Montpellier (dropping from three to two weekly flights) and Zurich (starting July 15th).
Travelers heading to Spain should also note that flights from Tangier to Barcelona and Malaga will see a decrease in frequency. The good news? Most of these European services are expected to return to their regular schedules by October.
A Strategic Pivot: Expanding the African Network
While European routes are tightening, Royal Air Maroc is doubling down on its commitment to the African continent. In a bold move to strengthen its hub in Casablanca, the airline is increasing weekly frequencies to several key African destinations.
Starting in June, travelers will see an increase of one to two weekly flights to the following cities:
- West Africa: Abuja, Accra, Bamako, Cotonou, Lomé, and Ouagadougou.
- Central Africa: Douala, Lagos, and Libreville.
