Major Traffic Alert: Fatal Three-Vehicle Collision on the QEW

If you are planning to travel through the Niagara Falls region, be advised that significant disruptions are occurring. A devastating three-vehicle collision has resulted in a complete shutdown of the QEW, leaving commuters facing extensive delays that are expected to last well into the evening.

What Happened?

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, situated between Thorold Stone Road and Mountain Road. According to reports from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the crash involved three vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.

The scene is particularly complex as the tractor-trailer is currently blocking both lanes of the highway. In a dramatic turn of events, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP noted that the truck became “tangled up” in one of the large overhead signs spanning the Niagara-bound side of the highway, further complicating recovery efforts.

Casualties and Emergency Response

Tragically, the impact of the collision was severe:

    n

  • Fatal Casualty: The driver of the tractor-trailer was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Critical Injury: Another driver involved in the crash had to be airlifted to a trauma centre. The full extent of their injuries has not yet been released.

Investigation and Road Closures

The OPP is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. Early reports suggest that there may have been “aggressive or unpredictable driving” in the area shortly before the crash occurred. Officers are working tirelessly to confirm if any of the vehicles involved were linked to these reports.

Due to the nature of the wreckage and the overhead sign damage, the highway is expected to remain closed until well after dark. Drivers are strongly encouraged to seek alternative routes to avoid the gridlock.

How You Can Help: Call for Dashcam Footage

Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance. If you were driving in the vicinity of the QEW between Thorold Stone and Mountain roads roughly an hour and a half prior to the collision and captured anything unusual on your dashcam, please contact the Niagara OPP immediately.

Your footage could be the key to piecing together the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
