Woman Dies in Harlem Apartment Fire: Latest NYC News

A devastating fire in a Harlem apartment building on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman, according to authorities. The incident occurred at a six-story building located on West 140th Street, between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.

Details of the Incident

The New York Police Department (NYPD) received calls about the fire just after 4:30 p.m. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshals’ office.

“The smoke was really dark, really heavy coming out the window. When you see that many firetrucks, you know you’ve got a serious fire on your hands. It’s just a terrible tragedy that there had to be a victim,” said Nyla Redding, 28, a witness to the event, in a statement to The Post.

Response and Extinguishment

Approximately 80 firefighters and EMS personnel were dispatched to battle the blaze, as reported by PIX 11. The one-alarm fire was successfully extinguished over an hour later.

Another witness, Anthony March, 40, expressed his shock and sorrow: “It looked really bad for a minute there — but I didn’t find out until later that someone had died. I feel terrible for her, terrible for her family. One minute you’re enjoying a beautiful Sunday, the next you’re gone. And such a terrible way to go.”

Scene and Investigation

A poignant scene unfolded at the site, with a charred teddy bear visible on the roof of an SUV parked in front of the building. The FDNY has not yet released further comments regarding the incident. This tragic event underscores the importance of fire safety and the swift response of emergency services in NYC.
