Northeastern University Prioritizes Campus Safety After Recent Incidents
“Our campus is safe at this time,” affirmed Ruben Galindo, Chief of Police at Northeastern University. “There is no threat or concern.” This statement comes following two separate, unrelated incidents of violence near the Boston campus in the past week, which law enforcement officials have characterized as “random acts of violence.” University leadership has consistently emphasized the ongoing security of the campus and the absence of any continuing danger to the community.
Understanding the Recent Events
Both incidents involved stabbings, occurring on Wednesday and Friday. According to Chief Galindo, there is no indication that either event targeted the university or its community members. The suspect in Wednesday’s incident is currently in custody, while the investigation into Friday’s incident remains active.
Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD) is working closely with the Boston Police Department, providing assistance including camera footage, to aid in the investigation and apprehension of suspects. Increased police patrols have been implemented across campus since last Friday, enhancing visibility and serving as a deterrent. You can find more information about campus safety resources on the Northeastern University Police Department website.
Incident Details
- Wednesday Incident: An altercation at 291 Huntington Ave. resulted in a stabbing. The victim sought aid at 291 St. Botolph Street, and NUPD provided immediate assistance. Stephen Dantzler, 58, of Boston, was arrested in connection with this incident.
- Friday Incident: A stabbing occurred near 21 Forsyth St. Campus police captured the incident on camera, and it was determined the suspect was not affiliated with the university and posed no immediate threat.
- Shots Fired Report: On Wednesday evening, reports of shots fired near Hemenway and Gainsborough Streets prompted an immediate response from NUPD, who saturated the area with patrols and confirmed the vehicle involved had left the area without posing a threat.
Enhanced Security Measures
Northeastern University maintains a robust security infrastructure, including a network of approximately 1,200 cameras providing real-time monitoring and facilitating rapid response to potential safety concerns. The university also operates a Global Safety Operations Center, a 24/7 hub that monitors global risks and security events across all 13 campuses, tracking the location and well-being of students, faculty, and staff worldwide.
Staying Safe: Tips for the Campus Community
While the incidents occurred off-campus and the university remains secure, NUPD encourages students to remain vigilant, especially when navigating surrounding city areas. Here are some key safety recommendations:
- Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings, particularly at night, and limit distractions like phone use.
- Travel with Others: When possible, travel with friends after dark and trust your instincts in unfamiliar situations.
- Utilize Campus Resources: Take advantage of tools like the SafeZone app, which connects users directly to NUPD, and the university’s 24/7 patrols.
As Chief Galindo noted, an increase in incidents is not uncommon in urban settings, especially with warmer weather and increased activity. Northeastern University remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its entire community.
