Nebraska Fires: Latest Updates on Lancaster & Gage County Wildfires
LINCOLN, Neb. – Multiple grass fires erupted across Lancaster and Gage Counties in Nebraska on Thursday, prompting evacuation orders and significant firefighting efforts. While conditions have improved, the situation remains dynamic, and residents are urged to stay vigilant.
Lancaster County Fires – Containment and Evacuation Updates
Evacuation orders have been lifted for residents in southwest Lancaster County following a series of grass fires that broke out throughout the day. Firefighters initially battled two significant fires northwest and southwest of Denton, and a third east of Crete, beginning around 1:50 p.m. Additional fires continued to ignite across the county into the afternoon.
As of 5:50 p.m. local time, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (LSO) reported that while isolated grass fires were still occurring, the majority were largely contained. Crews focused on hotspots in the following areas:
- SW 112th Street and W Pioneers Road – Contained around 2:20 p.m.
- SW 100th Street and Wittstruck Road, and SW 84th Street and Wittstruck Road – Evacuation orders lifted just before 6:00 p.m.
Residents are advised to avoid affected areas and strictly adhere to instructions from firefighters and law enforcement personnel should further evacuation become necessary. The LSO emphasized the importance of keeping roads clear to allow fire crews unimpeded access.
Gage County Highway Closure – Now Reopened
Highway 77 in Gage County was temporarily closed in both directions between West Hickory Road and West Pickrell Road due to a separate grass fire. Fortunately, the highway reopened as of 4:16 p.m.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office reported that firefighters faced challenging conditions battling the blaze, including strong winds and heavy smoke. These conditions significantly hampered visibility and increased the fire’s potential for rapid spread.
