Prepare for Gridlock: Major Bridge Closures Hit Montreal This Weekend

If you are planning to travel across the city or commute to the South Shore this weekend, be warned: major traffic disruptions are expected. Several key arteries, most notably the city’s primary bridges, will undergo essential maintenance, leading to significant lane closures and detours.

The Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge: Southbound Shutdown

Commuters heading toward the South Shore should seek alternative routes. Starting Friday at 11:00 PM, the Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge will be completely closed in the Southbound direction for critical pavement rehabilitation.

The disruptions will begin at the Turcot Interchange, where several accesses will be blocked, including:

    n

  • Exit 63-O on Highway 20.
  • n

  • The La Vérendrye entrance.
  • n

  • The segment where Highways 10 East, 15 South, and 20 East converge.
  • n

According to Signature sur le Saint-Laurent, the project manager, these works are vital to ensure the safety and long-term durability of the road surface. Note that Northbound traffic will face similar closures next weekend.

Victoria Bridge: Limited Access

Unfortunately, the nearby Victoria Bridge will not serve as a seamless alternative. From Friday at 11:00 PM until Monday at 5:00 AM, the bridge will be fully closed toward Montreal. Only a single lane will remain open for those heading toward the South Shore.

Additionally, traffic on Highway 20 will be interrupted Westbound between exit 95 (boulevard de Montarville) and the following entrance.

Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel Area

Access around the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel will also be complicated. Avenue Souligny will see partial closures:

    n

  • Westbound: Closed between Honoré-Beaugrand Street and the A-25 interchange from Friday 11:00 PM until August 27 at 5:00 AM.
  • n

  • Eastbound: Closed between Dickson and Honoré-Beaugrand streets from Friday 11:00 PM until Monday 5:00 AM.
