Mont-Sainte-Anne’s Great Revival: Quebec Invests $14 Million to Boost Outdoor Tourism
In a decisive move to revitalize one of Quebec’s most iconic landmarks, the provincial government has announced a significant $14 million investment to relaunch activities around the perimeter of Mont-Sainte-Anne. This strategic funding marks the official return of Sépaq as the exclusive operator of the 50-square-kilometre area surrounding the mountain.
A Fresh Start for Infrastructure and Nature
The investment is not just about funding; it’s about a complete restoration of the outdoor experience. The government recognizes that the site requires substantial “love” and modernization to meet the expectations of today’s adventurers. The $14 million envelope is specifically allocated to:
- n
- Heavy Machinery: Purchase of new mechanical shovels and the construction of a state-of-the-art warehouse-workshop.
- Facility Restoration: Comprehensive repairs to bridges and buildings within the outdoor center.
- Trail Maintenance: An additional $800,000 has already been spent to acquire two professional snow groomers from Mécanique J. Clair to ensure trails are in peak condition.
Minister Kariane Bourassa, responsible for Sport, Leisure, and Outdoor Recreation, emphasized that these concrete measures are essential to rectify previous shortcomings and ensure the site’s long-term viability.
The Economic Ripple Effect: More Than Just Sport
The return of Sépaq is expected to be a game-changer for the local economy. According to Martin Soucy, CEO of Sépaq, the business model is designed for sustainability and profitability without further reliance on public funds. The economic impact is staggering: for every dollar generated by Sépaq, an estimated $62 in economic benefits will flow into the local community.
Furthermore, outdoor enthusiasts have reason to cheer, as the management shift could lead to a reduction in mountain biking pass prices starting next season.
A Vision for a Four-Season Hub of Excellence
The government’s goal is ambitious: to transform Mont-Sainte-Anne into a national training center and a premier four-season destination. This vision is bolstered by a parallel private investment of $50 million from Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR), who manage the ski resort.
Key updates from RCR include:
- n
- The L’Express du Sud: Construction has officially begun on a new lift, with a scheduled opening for skiers on February 15, 2027.
- Modernization: A full-scale upgrade of recreational and tourist infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience.
Note: Due to the intensification of construction work this summer, the start of the downhill mountain biking season will be slightly delayed until the national holiday (Saint-Jean-Baptiste).
Community Relief and Future Growth
For years, the community and groups like the Amis du Mont-Sainte-Anne have called for government intervention. The announcement has brought a wave of relief to local business owners and sports enthusiasts alike. Jean-François Simard, Minister of Employment, described Mont-Sainte-Anne as the “locomotive” for local commerce, highlighting its critical role in regional prosperity.
With the support of the Government of Quebec and the expertise of Sépaq, Mont-Sainte-Anne is well on its way to reclaiming its status as a world-class destination for outdoor lovers.
