Milwaukee, WI – A 31-year-old suspect was fatally shot by Milwaukee police following a pursuit connected to an earlier homicide on Monday, April 13th. The incident unfolded near 35th and National Avenue, according to reports from FOX6 News.
What Happened?
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman stated that the initial incident involved a shooting near 7th and Mitchell around 5:30 a.m., resulting in the death of a 27-year-old. Investigators quickly identified a vehicle believed to be linked to this homicide.
Later in the day, around 4:45 p.m., officers attempted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle near 35th and Walnut. The driver fled, initiating a pursuit that culminated in a crash near 35th and National. According to police reports, the suspect exited the vehicle and immediately opened fire on the responding officers.
Exchange of Fire and Aftermath
Several officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Firearms were recovered at the scene, and thankfully, no other individuals were injured by gunfire. Witnesses described the scene as a “shootout.” The suspect, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A 34-year-old individual involved in the crash was also transported to a hospital with non-fatal injuries. Several vehicles sustained damage during the incident.
Officer Involvement and Investigation
Eight Milwaukee police officers discharged their firearms during the incident. Their service tenures range from approximately seven months to over eight years. All officers involved have been placed on administrative duty, standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, led by the Wauwatosa Police Department, is currently investigating the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities state that information remains fluid.
