Lebanon News: Escalating Tensions and Ceasefire Concerns

Recent reports indicate a concerning escalation of conflict in southern Lebanon, with Israeli military actions targeting what they claim are Hezbollah sites. However, these strikes are increasingly impacting civilian areas and infrastructure, raising serious questions about adherence to the November 2024 ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

Latest Israeli Strikes in Southern Lebanon

According to an Al Jazeera correspondent on the ground, Israeli air strikes have recently targeted Blat and Wadi Barghouti in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region of southern Lebanon. While the Israeli military maintains its attacks are focused on Hezbollah infrastructure, evidence suggests a pattern of civilian and civilian infrastructure being caught in the crossfire. These near-daily attacks are a clear violation of the established ceasefire.

The Lebanese Al-Mayadeen channel has confirmed Israeli aircraft targeted the heights of the al-Tuffah region with a series of raids. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV reported the use of explosive devices dropped by Israeli “quadcopter” drones in the town of Markaba – the third such incident.

Civilian Casualties and Humanitarian Impact

The human cost of this ongoing conflict is deeply troubling. On Thursday, Israeli strikes on Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley resulted in one fatality and 29 injuries. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed the death of a 16-year-old Syrian boy, Hussein Mohsen al-Khalaf, in a strike near Baalbek, as reported by L’Orient news outlet.

Since the November 2024 ceasefire, over 300 people have been killed, including 127 civilians, according to the United Nations. The initial conflict, beginning in October 2023 and escalating to a full-scale war in September 2024, resulted in over 4,000 deaths and approximately 17,000 injuries in Lebanon.

Continued Occupation and Disarmament Disputes

Israel continues to occupy portions of Lebanon, hindering reconstruction efforts in border villages and preventing the return of displaced residents. The Lebanese government asserts it is nearing completion of its commitment to disarm Hezbollah south of the Litani River, estimating four months to finalize the second phase of this process.

However, Hezbollah rejects this timeline, arguing that the disarmament agreement only applies to areas south of the Litani River. The group maintains it will not disarm as long as Israel continues its attacks and occupation of Lebanese territory. This stance underscores the complex and deeply rooted issues at the heart of the conflict.

Recent Events

Last week, at least 12 people were killed in Israeli strikes targeting the Bekaa Valley and the Ein el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon. Israel claims these strikes targeted Hezbollah and Hamas command centres.
