McConnell Air Force Base Prepares for Severe Weather, Relocates Aircraft
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – McConnell Air Force Base is taking precautionary measures ahead of a forecasted period of severe weather expected to impact the Wichita area Thursday and Friday nights. The National Weather Service has issued a slight to enhanced risk of severe storms, with potential threats including damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes.
To safeguard its valuable assets and maintain operational readiness, the base is relocating its fleet of KC-46A Pegasus and KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft. Aircrews from the 22nd and 931st Air Refueling Wings are dispersing the aircraft to various military installations across the United States.
Ensuring Readiness and Protecting Assets
“This proactive relocation will ensure the aircraft remain fully mission-capable, allowing them to continue supporting assigned tasks and be readily available for future deployments,” stated a spokesperson for McConnell Air Force Base. “It also minimizes the risk of potential damage from the anticipated severe weather conditions.”
Beyond the aircraft relocation, the base is securing all remaining aircraft currently undergoing maintenance. These aircraft, along with essential flightline vehicles and equipment, are being moved into hangars to provide maximum protection against a wide range of potential weather impacts. This comprehensive preparation demonstrates the base’s commitment to safeguarding its resources and maintaining its vital role in national defense.
