A Breakthrough in Raleigh: Cold Case Murder Solved After Five Years
In a stunning turn of events, the Raleigh Police Department has brought closure to a grieving family and a community that had long waited for answers. A homicide case from 2019, which had gone cold for years, has finally been solved thanks to the evolution of forensic technology.
The Tragic Events of 2019
The case dates back to June 6, 2019, when officers were called to the 3300 block of Vinson Court. The investigation led them to nearby Brentwood Park, where the body of 26-year-old Jorge Zelaya was discovered. The scene was grim; investigators determined that Zelaya had succumbed to severe stab wounds, including a fatal injury to his throat.
Despite exhaustive efforts by homicide detectives—including numerous interviews with residents and associates of the victim—no suspect was identified at the time. For years, the case remained an open wound for the family and a mystery for the city of Raleigh.
Science Meets Justice: The Power of Modern Forensics
The tide turned in February when Raleigh police decided to revisit the evidence gathered during the initial investigation. Recognizing that science had progressed, they sent the evidence to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Crime Laboratory.
Utilizing advanced forensic DNA testing and analysis techniques that were simply unavailable in 2019, the laboratory was able to produce a positive match. This scientific breakthrough linked the evidence directly to 49-year-old Roger Riddick.
The Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Following the forensic match, the case was presented to the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, where murder charges were approved. On Thursday, law enforcement officers successfully apprehended Riddick.
