Jake Lang Linked to Violent New York Protest Involving Explosive Device
A demonstration organized by Jake Lang in New York City took a dangerous turn on Saturday, culminating in the deployment of an improvised explosive device (IED) and multiple arrests. The incident occurred as anti-Islam protesters clashed with a larger group of counterprotesters near the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
IED Thrown During Protest, Suspects in Custody
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the device thrown during the protest was, in fact, an IED capable of causing serious harm or even death. “It is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb,” Tisch stated in a social media post. A second device was also recovered. Two men, identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, have been taken into custody and are being investigated in collaboration with federal prosecutors and the FBI through a joint terrorism taskforce.
Commissioner Tisch praised the swift action of NYPD officers, stating, “I want to again thank the brave members of the NYPD who ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects.”
Mayor Mamdani Condemns Bigotry and Violence
Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a statement condemning the protest as “rooted in bigotry and racism,” emphasizing that such hate has no place in New York City. He further denounced the violence that followed, stating, “The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.”
Escalation of Tensions and Arrests
The protest, initially a “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” demonstration, drew approximately 20 far-right protesters. This was met by a counterprotest of around 125 individuals. Tensions escalated when someone from the anti-Islam group deployed pepper spray against the counterprotesters. This sparked fistfights and the throwing of raw eggs.
According to police reports, a counterprotester then lit and threw a device containing nuts, bolts, and screws at the anti-Muslim protesters. The device struck a barrier just feet from police officers and extinguished itself. The same individual then received a second device, which they subsequently dropped.
Jake Lang’s History and Political Aspirations
Jake Lang has a history of involvement in controversial protests and legal issues. He was previously charged with assaulting an officer with a baseball bat and civil disorder, but received clemency as part of Donald Trump’s pardon of January 6th defendants last year. Lang recently announced his candidacy for the US Senate in Florida. He has also been involved in protests in Minneapolis during the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Authorities have confirmed that Mayor Mamdani was not present at his residence during the incident. No injuries were reported.
Further Investigation
The NYPD is continuing its investigation into the incident, including a thorough analysis of both explosive devices. The focus remains on determining the full extent of the threat and ensuring the safety of New Yorkers.
