Hydro One Outage: Thousands Affected Across Ontario
KAWARTHAS – As of today, a significant Hydro One outage is impacting 35,511 customers across Ontario, with Huntsville and Minden being the hardest hit areas. Bianca Pizzo, Media Relations at Hydro One, acknowledged the challenges faced by those without power, stating, “I’d like to start by acknowledging that we know being without power is challenging.”
What Caused the Outage?
Severe thunderstorms overnight were the initial cause of widespread disruptions. However, Hydro One anticipates further outages as freezing rain and high winds are expected to continue into tomorrow. Crews are actively working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
Restoration Times & Updates
Hydro One recommends customers frequently check the Hydro One outage app for the most up-to-date restoration estimates. The app refreshes every 10 minutes, providing the latest information on affected areas and estimated repair times. You can find more information on their website: Hydro One.
Preparing for an Extended Outage
Pizzo emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, “We’re encouraging customers to prepare for the potential of an extended power outage.” Here’s what you should do:
- Restock your emergency kit: Include items tailored to your household’s needs.
- Essential Supplies: Water, non-perishable food, cash, blankets, medication, and a first-aid kit are crucial.
- Stay Connected: Ensure you have flashlights, extra batteries, and a way to charge your cell phones.
Safety First: Fallen Power Lines
If you spot a fallen power line, maintain a safe distance of at least 10 metres (the length of a school bus) – even if it doesn’t appear to be live. This is a critical safety precaution. Report it immediately to Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.
Flooding & Electrical Safety
If flooding is occurring in your area and water is approaching electrical outlets, contact Hydro One to disconnect your power. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
