Beyond the Surf: A Passion for Mental Health
While many knew Matt through his work with Bondi Rescue, his most profound contribution was his tireless advocacy for suicide prevention. In 2009, Matt faced the unimaginable loss of his older brother, Jonathan (‘JD’), and younger sister, Rachel, to suicide within months of each other.
Rather than letting grief consume him, Matt transformed his pain into a mission. He founded FTW Revolution, a clothing brand dedicated to funding suicide prevention initiatives and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. By bravely sharing his own family’s tragedy, Matt provided a lifeline to countless individuals across the globe, proving that vulnerability is a strength.
Tributes from the Bondi Community
Those who worked alongside Matt remember him as a one-of-a-kind personality who could brighten any room. Fellow lifeguard Daniel ‘Beardy’ McLaughlin recalled Matt’s unique ability to lift the mood of any situation: “Matt was such a good bloke… He had an incredibly unique sense of humour and an ability to lift any situation. He was one in a million.”
Trent ‘Singlets’ Falson added that Matt’s kindness extended to everyone he met, regardless of whether they were a lifelong friend or a complete stranger. His work as a mental health campaigner was described as “tireless,” offering salvation and hope to many.
