Exploring the Notre-Dame du Saguenay: A New Virtual Journey into Quebec’s Heritage

The breathtaking landscapes of Quebec are home to countless treasures, but not all are easily accessible to every traveler. For years, the majestic Notre-Dame du Saguenay statue, nestled within the Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park, has been a beacon of spiritual and cultural significance. However, reaching it requires a challenging hike that isn’t feasible for everyone.

In a brilliant move to blend technology with tradition, the MRC du Fjord-du-Saguenay has launched an innovative virtual tour project, ensuring that this iconic landmark is now available to all, regardless of their physical mobility.

Making Heritage Accessible to All

For many, the trail leading to the statue in Rivière-Éternité is a rewarding trek, but it demands a high level of physical fitness. Recognizing the needs of an aging population and individuals with reduced mobility, local authorities decided to break down these barriers.

“It is not accessible to everyone; you need to be in very good physical shape to make the climb. We also have an aging population, and religious tourism doesn’t always attract the youngest demographic. We wanted to make it more accessible,” explained Myriam Blais, cultural heritage development advisor for the MRC du Fjord-du-Saguenay.

The project gained significant momentum in July 2024, when a section of the trail was temporarily closed for stabilization work. Rather than seeing this as a setback, the organization viewed it as a golden opportunity to digitize the experience.

What to Expect from the Virtual Experience

The new digital experience isn’t just a simple photo gallery; it is an immersive journey. Designed with intuitive software similar to high-end virtual home tours, the platform allows users to “walk” around the statue and explore the surrounding vistas from multiple perspectives.

Key Features of the Virtual Tour:

  • Interactive Navigation: Move freely around the monument as if you were there in person.
  • Educational Vignettes: Information pop-ups are placed throughout the tour, offering deep dives into the history of the site.
  • Atmospheric Soundtrack: The experience is enhanced by the symphonic work “Cap Trinité” composed by Martin Lapierre, adding an emotional layer to the visual beauty.

How to Access the Tour

The virtual tour will soon be available to the general public through the official websites of the MRC du Fjord-du-Saguenay and the Municipality of Rivière-Éternité. Whether you are a history buff, a travel enthusiast, or someone unable to make the physical journey, this tool brings a piece of Quebec’s soul directly to your screen.

While the physical trail reopened in December 2025 for those seeking the adventure of a hike, the virtual alternative stands as a testament to how Canada is leveraging technology to preserve and share its cultural identity inclusively.
