Storm Havoc in Northern Kentucky: Businesses and Infrastructure Hit Hard
Residents of Florence, Kentucky, awoke to a scene of chaos this Thursday after a series of intense, tornado-warned storms swept through the Tri-State area. The severe weather left a significant mark on the community, causing widespread structural damage and triggering a massive Duke Energy power outage that paralyzed several key commercial zones.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington has confirmed multiple reports of damage across northern Kentucky, with the Florence area bearing the brunt of the storm’s impact.
Commercial Damage on Mall Road and Dream Street
The heart of Florence’s commercial district was particularly hard hit. Local authorities reported significant debris and structural failures along Mall Road and Dream Street. Several well-known establishments suffered losses, including:
- n
- Red Lobster, Costco, and Dave & Buster’s: All reported varying levels of storm-related damage.
- Big Red Appliances: The business on Dream Street suffered a severe blow, with its roof completely ripped off by the high winds.
The Ripple Effect of the Duke Energy Power Outage
The infrastructure failures were exacerbated by a critical Duke Energy power outage. A massive power pole was downed on Industrial Road, cutting off electricity to several businesses, including the Joseph Cadillac dealership. This loss of power didn’t just stop business operations; it created a cascading effect on the city’s utility systems.
One of the most unusual incidents occurred at the Florence Y’ALL water tower. According to City Clerk Melissa Kramer, the power outage disabled the tower’s pumps, preventing water from moving through the system. This led to a visible “overflow event.”
“Greater Cincinnati Water Works was actively filling the tower, but when the power went out, the tower’s pumps were unable to move the water through the system, leading to the overflow,” Kramer explained.
Recovery and Current Status
Despite the dramatic overflow, officials assure the public that the system functioned as designed to prevent catastrophic structural damage. There has been no impact on the water supply or service for local customers, as Greater Cincinnati Water Works implemented operational adjustments to bypass the tower.
Electricians have already inspected the equipment for water damage, and minor repairs to electrical panels are currently underway. Normal operations at the Florence Y’ALL water tower are expected to resume as soon as power is fully restored.

Stay safe, Florence. Keep monitoring local alerts and avoid downed power lines in your area.
