Dive Into Summer: NYC Public Swimming Facilities Open for the Season!

As the temperature rises and the school year comes to a close, New Yorkers have a reason to celebrate. The city’s iconic public swimming facilities are officially open for the season, offering a refreshing escape from the urban heat across all five boroughs.

The kickoff was nothing short of spectacular. In a spirited celebration at the Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem, Mayor Zohran Mamdani took a literal plunge, jumping into the water fully dressed in a suit and tie to join local children in welcoming the summer. While some kids joked that the water was “freezing cold,” others expressed pure joy, having waited since winter for the moment they could finally dive back in.

Celebrating 90 Years of Public Swimming

This year isn’t just about beating the heat; it’s a milestone anniversary. New York City is celebrating 90 years of public swimming, highlighting the vital role these facilities play in community health and social cohesion. According to NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura, the pool is the ultimate sanctuary for residents to disconnect from their apartments and reconnect with nature and their neighbors.

Expanding Access: Learn to Swim & Lap Swimming

The city is making a concerted effort to ensure that every resident, regardless of skill level, can enjoy a swimming facility. This summer, the popular “Learn to Swim” program has been expanded, providing critical water safety skills to thousands of children and adults.

  • Free Aquatics Courses: Available at 18 different pools throughout the summer.
  • Expanded Lap Swimming: The number of pools offering lap swimming has doubled, increasing from 5 to 10 facilities to support fitness enthusiasts.

For many, like Mila Madera from The Bronx, the pool is more than just a place to exercise; it’s a place for mental clarity. “Whenever I’m swimming, I feel like my mind is blank… Everything’s calm,” Mila shared, emphasizing the therapeutic benefits of aquatic activities.

Safety First: Tackling the Lifeguard Shortage

Safety remains a top priority for the city’s aquatic centers. After facing staffing challenges in recent years, NYC has successfully bolstered its team of professionals. Commissioner Shimamura noted that the city currently has approximately 870 lifeguards on duty—about 150 more than last year—with numbers expected to peak by the Fourth of July holiday.

Whether you are looking to master your stroke, get some intense cardio in, or simply cool off with your family, the city’s swimming facilities are ready for you. Public pools will remain open through September 13th.
