Daylight Saving Time Change 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Stay informed about all the latest updates in your region with our application! This year, as with every year, the last weekend of March marks a significant change: the shift to Daylight Saving Time. On the night of Saturday, March 9th to Sunday, March 10th, 2024, we will ‘spring forward’ and adjust our clocks.

How to Adjust Your Clocks

Fortunately, most electronic devices – smartphones, computers, ovens, and more – will automatically update. However, for traditional watches and clocks that require manual adjustment, remember to advance your clocks by one hour at 2:00 AM, jumping directly to 3:00 AM. This means we’ll all lose an hour of sleep this weekend.

The History Behind the Change

The practice of switching between Daylight Saving Time (DST) and standard time was first implemented in Europe during the 1970s, amidst the energy crisis. The goal was to conserve energy by making better use of daylight hours. The idea was that extending daylight into the evening would reduce the need for artificial lighting.

Calls for Abolition

Interestingly, the European Commission proposed abolishing this biannual time change as early as 2018, following a widespread consultation across Europe. An overwhelming 84% of participants – nearly 4 million people – voted to end the practice, and the European Parliament subsequently gave its approval. However, the measure never came into effect due to a lack of consensus among the 27 member states.

Renewed Debate and Future Outlook

The topic resurfaced during the last switch to standard time in October 2023. Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, argued that “the time has come to finally put an end to the changing of the clock.” He emphasized that the system “affects us all, annoys most of us, and I would even say harms us,” while also pointing out that it “no longer generates energy savings.”

While the debate continues, the future of Daylight Saving Time remains uncertain. Many argue that the disruption to sleep schedules and potential health impacts outweigh any perceived benefits. You can find more information about the ongoing discussions at the European Parliament’s website.
