NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich – Newaygo County Emergency Services are urging all residents remaining in the Muskegon River Floodplain below the Croton Dam to evacuate immediately. This comes as water levels continue to rise rapidly due to recent heavy rainfall and snowmelt.
No Structural Concerns with Croton Dam, But Evacuation is Critical
Newaygo County Sheriff Bob Mendham has assured the public that there are currently no concerns regarding the structural integrity of the Croton Dam itself. However, the rapidly escalating water levels necessitate a precautionary evacuation to ensure the safety of residents. Deputies are actively going door-to-door to alert and assist with the evacuation process.
Flash Flood Watch Remains in Effect for White River
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for the White River below the Hesperia Dam. Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to evacuate immediately. The situation is evolving quickly, and water levels are changing rapidly. Staying informed and taking prompt action is crucial.
White River Conditions – Hesperia Dam
Local officials report that the White River in Hesperia is experiencing a rapid rise in water levels. Water is currently flowing over the spillway of the Hesperia Dam and is nearing the point of overtopping the dam itself. The Division Street bridge upstream of the dam is already being impacted by the rising waters.
Muskegon River Conditions – Croton Dam
The Muskegon River is also being closely monitored. Current river levels can be viewed in real-time at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website: https://water.noaa.gov/wfo/grr. Three USGS streamgages are being utilized to track the river’s progress.
Road Closures
