Powering the Future: CPS Energy and OCI Energy Launch the ‘Alamo City’ Battery Storage Project
The landscape of renewable energy in Texas is evolving rapidly. In a significant move toward grid stability and sustainability, CPS Energy, San Antonio’s municipal utility, has partnered with OCI Energy to break ground on a state-of-the-art utility-scale battery storage project in Bexar County. Known as the Alamo City project, this installation marks a pivotal step in strengthening the North American power grid.
What is the Alamo City Project?
The Alamo City project is not just another energy installation; it is a massive infrastructure investment designed to balance the energy load of the region. Spanning a vast 140,000-square-meter site, the facility is engineered to provide high-capacity energy reserves that can be deployed during peak demand.
Key Technical Specifications:
- n
- Output Capacity: 120 megawatts (MW).
- Storage Capacity: 480 megawatt-hours (MWh).
- Impact: Capable of providing four hours of continuous backup electricity.
- Reach: Estimated to support approximately 30,000 households in the San Antonio metropolitan area.
A Strategic Partnership for a Greener Grid
The project is the result of a long-standing collaboration. OCI and CPS Energy have maintained a development partnership since 2012. Under a new 20-year capacity agreement, OCI will manage the storage and sell the electricity back to CPS Energy, ensuring a reliable power supply for 1.28 million households across Texas.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured key industry leaders, including Kim Cheong-ho (CEO of OCI Enterprises), Sabah Bayatli (President of OCI Energy), Rudy D. Garza (President and CEO of CPS Energy), and Park Jae-hong (Head of LG Energy Solution Vertech’s Korea operations).
The Power Behind the Project: Technology and Financing
Bringing a project of this scale to life requires world-class technology and financial backing. The project is supported by financing from ING Capital, ensuring the necessary capital for its ambitious timeline. On the technical side, LG Energy Solution Vertech has been selected to supply the advanced battery systems, while Elgin Power Solutions is overseeing the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC).
OCI Energy’s Growing Footprint in North America
This project is part of a broader strategic push by OCI Energy to dominate the North American renewable market. Beyond the Alamo City project, OCI Energy recently sold a 50% stake in its 500-megawatt La Salle solar project to Arava Power, an Israeli energy firm.
Currently, OCI Energy boasts an impressive development pipeline consisting of 31 projects totaling 7 gigawatts. This portfolio is split evenly between utility-scale solar installations and energy storage systems, signaling a comprehensive approach to the energy transition.
Looking Ahead: 2027 and Beyond
The Alamo City facility is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2027. Once active, it will serve as a critical buffer for the Texas grid, reducing the risk of outages during heatwaves or peak usage periods and accelerating the transition toward a more sustainable energy future.
