CHICAGO (WLS) — The Chicago area experienced a turbulent Tuesday as severe storms swept through, bringing high winds, hail, and significant disruptions to air travel. The National Weather Service had placed southern portions of the Chicago area and northwest Indiana under a Level 2 risk for severe weather, with surrounding areas at a Level 1 risk. These conditions led to widespread travel chaos and prompted safety alerts across the region.

Chicago Airports Grapple with Flight Cancellations and Delays

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) bore the brunt of the storm’s impact, with at least 294 flights canceled as of 9:06 p.m. local time. Earlier in the day, a temporary ground stop was issued for departures due to airspace congestion, followed by another due to staffing shortages. A ground delay remains in effect for departures, currently averaging 206 minutes, and is expected to continue until 3 a.m. Wednesday. Passengers are strongly advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flight status. You can find real-time flight information at Chicago O’Hare’s official website.

Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) also experienced delays, averaging 20 minutes, with only one cancellation reported. While less severely impacted than O’Hare, travelers at Midway should still anticipate potential disruptions.

Storm Development and Timeline

According to ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Tracy Butler, initial storms arrived in the area during the morning hours, triggering several alerts. Meteorologist Phil Schwarz noted that additional storms began developing west and north of the city around 2 p.m. While initially below severe thresholds, these storms rapidly intensified and moved across the Chicago area.

Temperatures experienced a significant drop after 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. along the lakefront as the cold front moved southward. The primary threat within the city and areas to the north peaked around 2 p.m., shifting south between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for several Chicago-area counties as a result of the intensifying storms. Northwest Indiana experienced particularly strong hail and high winds.

Looking Ahead: Wednesday and Beyond

Wednesday will be considerably colder, with a chance of rain south of the city, primarily during the morning. However, the respite will be brief. The threat of more severe weather is expected to return by late Thursday. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential future storms.
