Carls Jr. Area Fire: Fresno Building Engulfed in Flames – Latest Updates

Massive Fire Erupts Near Carl’s Jr. in Central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – A dramatic scene unfolded Wednesday evening in Central Fresno as a large plume of smoke and flames billowed from a vacant building located near the intersection of Blackstone and McKinley Avenues, in the vicinity of a Carl’s Jr. restaurant. The blaze drew a significant response from the Fresno City Fire Department.

Firefighters strategically attacked the fire from both the ground and the air, utilizing up to six fire engines. Battalion Chief Timothy Fulmer stated, “We are going to put the ariels up and knock down as much as we can but I fully expect we’ll end up dropping the building.” The intensity of the fire quickly escalated, captivating onlookers.

Initial Response and Challenges

“When crews arrived, they had heavy smoke showing from some windows and the roof,” Chief Fulmer reported. Witnesses described the rapid growth of the fire. Daniel Garcia, a Fresno City College student, shared, “You could feel the smoke, like, going into your lungs,” as he walked to a nearby bus stop with friends.

This location has a history of fires, prompting concerns about potential causes. Authorities suspect the involvement of individuals experiencing homelessness. “We do suspect that there’s homeless inside and somebody started a fire, which caused what we have behind here today,” Chief Fulmer explained.

Rescue Efforts and Defensive Tactics

Initially, firefighters entered rescue mode, believing individuals might be inside the structure. However, as conditions deteriorated, they transitioned to a “defensive” strategy. “Which means that we stand back and protect the exposures and buildings around it,” Chief Fulmer clarified. This approach prioritized safeguarding neighboring properties from the spreading flames.

Railway Project Context

The affected area is undergoing significant changes due to a railway project approved by the Fresno City Council last July. This project involves the acquisition of three businesses, including those near McKinley and Blackstone Avenues, to eliminate rail crossings. The project aims to lower the road level, improving traffic flow and safety. You can find more information about the railway project here.

Community Reaction

Local residents expressed sadness and concern over the incident. Aracly Galindo, a Fresno resident, commented, “It’s honestly just really sad seeing, like, stuff like this happen around like a city that I live in and grew up in.”

Fresno Fire investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Stay tuned for further updates.
