Calgary Traffic Disrupted by Multiple Collisions During Spring Snowstorm

Calgary commuters faced significant delays Wednesday night and Thursday morning as a spring snowstorm brought hazardous driving conditions and a series of collisions to major roadways. A particularly problematic stretch of Deerfoot Trail in southeast Calgary experienced temporary closures following multiple incidents.

Deerfoot Trail Closures & Incident Details

Emergency crews responded to reports of numerous vehicles involved in crashes on the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail between Glenmore Trail and the Calf Robe Bridge around 8:55 p.m. on Wednesday. Calgary police reported that as many as a dozen vehicles may have been involved in a series of collisions in the area. Fortunately, injuries were reported as minor, with no serious harm sustained.

Traffic was diverted from the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail at Glenmore Trail onto both eastbound and westbound Glenmore. The roadway fully reopened around 11:00 p.m. after crews cleared the scene.

Further south, the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were also temporarily shut down at Heritage Meadows Way SE due to additional collisions between Southland and Heritage Drive. These lanes reopened around 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

Snowfall Warning & Hazardous Travel Conditions

These incidents occurred as Calgary was under a snowfall warning issued by Environment Canada. The warning highlighted hazardous travel conditions due to several centimetres of snow accumulating across the city. Drivers were urged to exercise extreme caution and adjust their driving to the conditions.
