Belo Horizonte Nursing Home Collapse: Rescue Efforts Underway

Belo Horizonte, Brazil – March 5, 2026 – A devastating collapse occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at a nursing home located in the Jardim Vitória neighborhood of Belo Horizonte. Initial reports from TV Globo indicated approximately 20 individuals were potentially trapped under the rubble.

As of 7:00 PM local time, the situation has evolved, with confirmed reports of eight fatalities – five men and three women – and eight individuals rescued alive. Tragically, four people remain unaccounted for, and search efforts continue relentlessly.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Firefighters have established a perimeter around the site and are utilizing audible signals, including whistles, in an attempt to locate additional victims. “We are working tirelessly to reach those we can contact, prioritizing the safety of both victims and rescuers,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Viana of the Belo Horizonte Fire Department.

The four-story building collapsed around 1:30 AM. Neighbors, alerted by the intense noise, immediately mobilized to assist in the initial response. The Fire Department arrived on the scene approximately thirty minutes later.

Investigation and Safety Assessments

The Belo Horizonte Civil Defense has been notified and has confirmed that neighboring residences are not currently at risk. Notably, there was no rainfall at the time of the incident, raising suspicions of a potential structural failure. “What’s striking is that it wasn’t raining at the time of the accident. This isn’t a historically high-risk area, and we have no prior records of emergency responses here,” explained Elcione Menezes Alves, Subsecretary of Protection and Civil Defense for Belo Horizonte.

The nursing home, officially named Lar de Longa Permanência de Idosos, was operating with a valid license, set to expire in 2030. The facility also held a current sanitary permit, with the most recent inspection conducted by the Sanitary Surveillance agency in January of this year.

The Civil Police has initiated an investigation, dispatching forensic teams and a coroner to the site once rescue operations are complete. Further details will be released following preliminary assessments.
