A Radiant Light Extinguished: Remembering Emily Finn, A Life of Grace and Promise

The world recently lost a vibrant soul, a young woman whose life was a testament to dedication, passion, and kindness. Emily Finn, an 18-year-old ballet dancer with dreams of becoming a teacher, had her promising future tragically cut short in an act of senseless violence. Her passing has left an indelible void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the entire community that cherished her.

A Dancer’s Dream and a Teacher’s Heart

From a tender age, Emily Finn graced the stage with remarkable talent and an infectious spirit. A dedicated student at the American Ballet Studio in Bayport for over four years, she immersed herself in traditional ballet, captivating audiences in numerous performances of “The Nutcracker.” Her former instructors remember her as an accomplished ballerina with an extraordinary work ethic, often taking extra classes and serving as president of fundraising for the studio.

But Emily’s ambitions extended beyond the dance floor. After graduating from Sayville High School, she enrolled at SUNY Oneonta, eager to pursue her passion for early education. “She had everything in front of her. She would have been the best teacher, mother, and whatever she chose to be,” recounted Kathy Kairns-Scholz, the artistic director of the American Ballet Studio. Emily’s warm, welcoming personality and innate leadership qualities made her a beacon of light for younger students, whom she also taught.

The Unthinkable Tragedy

The promising trajectory of Emily’s life took a devastating turn on a fateful Wednesday. Home from college, Emily had gone to visit her ex-boyfriend in Nesconset to return his belongings following a recent breakup. In an incomprehensible act, her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, just one day before his 18th birthday, fired two shots from a legally owned shotgun: one fatal shot that claimed Emily’s life, and another self-inflicted shot to his own face. Police responded after the teen’s father discovered the scene and called 911. The ex-boyfriend survived and is awaiting arraignment on second-degree murder charges.

A Community United in Grief

The news of Emily’s passing sent shockwaves through the Sayville and Bayport communities. The American Ballet Studio, reeling from the loss of one of its brightest stars, canceled its performance in the Sayville Holiday Parade and the Miracle on Main tree-lighting festival. In a poignant tribute, the studio plans to dedicate this year’s “The Nutcracker” performance to Emily and establish a scholarship in her memory. “She was the nicest, kindest, talented and beautiful leader. She was loved by everybody,” shared Kairns-Scholz, reflecting the profound grief felt by all.

Sayville High School observed a 10-second moment of silence for Emily, and both the school and the Sayville Alumni Association expressed profound sorrow. “Our alumni community has lost one of its brightest lights to a senseless and unimaginable tragedy,” the association stated. Grief counselors have been made available at both the studio and the high school to support students grappling with the loss.

In a testament to the love and respect Emily commanded, family friends swiftly organized a fundraising account to support her family, which garnered over $65,000 within days.

Remembering and Reflecting

Emily Finn’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating impact of violence. While her life was tragically cut short, her spirit, her dreams, and the warmth she shared will forever resonate. Her family has asked guests attending her services to wear “a splash of pink,” her favorite color, a beautiful gesture to honor the vibrant young woman she was.

In the wake of such a tragedy, it’s vital to reflect on the importance of healthy relationships and recognizing warning signs. Resources are available for those who may be experiencing or witnessing domestic violence. If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline or other reputable support organizations.

Emily Finn may be gone, but her legacy of grace, kindness, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire. Her memory will be cherished, and her story will serve as a poignant call to foster a world where young dreams can flourish, untouched by violence.
