Urgent Health Alert: Frozen Blueberry Recall Due to E. coli Contamination
Health authorities have issued an urgent warning following a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections linked to organic frozen blueberries. What started as a limited recall has now expanded, affecting multiple brands and thousands of consumers. If you have frozen berries in your kitchen, now is the time to check your labels.
Which Products Are Affected?
The recall, originally initiated by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. based in San Carlos, Chile, now includes the following brands:
- n
- GreenWise Organic: All lots of Frozen Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries sold at Publix stores.
- Great Value: Specific lots of Frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend sold at Walmart stores.
The affected Great Value products were distributed across 16 states, including Florida, Texas, Illinois, and Ohio, while GreenWise products reached 8 states, including Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. While these specific distributions are centered in the US, food safety experts remind consumers that contaminated produce can often move through various supply chains.
Understanding the Risks: E. coli Symptoms and Complications
An infection caused by E. coli can range from mild to life-threatening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms typically appear between a few days to nine days after consumption. Keep an eye out for:
- n
- Severe stomach cramps
- Diarrhea (which can become bloody)
- Fever and nausea
- Vomiting
Warning: In severe cases, certain strains of E. coli can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that causes kidney failure, chronic hypertension, and potential neurological issues.
What Should You Do Now?
Your health is the priority. If you find any of the recalled products in your freezer, follow these steps immediately:
- Do not consume the product: Even if cooked, contaminated berries can pose a risk.
- Discard or Return: Throw the product away in a secure bin or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
- Monitor Your Health: If you have consumed these berries and are experiencing symptoms, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
The FDA and the CDC are continuing their investigation to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination and prevent further illnesses. Stay informed and always check official food safety portals for the latest updates on recalls.
