Honoring Our Healthcare Heroes: National Doctors Day
Today, March 30th, we celebrate National Doctors Day, a time to recognize the incredible contributions of physicians to our individual lives and the well-being of our communities. It’s a day to express gratitude for their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to patient care.
A History of Appreciation
The tradition of honoring doctors dates back to 1933, with the first official Doctors’ Day observed that year. Recognition grew, and in 1953, the United States House of Representatives formally passed a resolution commemorating the day. A significant milestone was reached in 1990 when President George H.W. Bush signed legislation officially designating March 30th as National Doctors Day, solidifying its place as a national observance.
Beyond Recognition: How Doctors Day is Celebrated
While ideally a day for patients and supporters of the healthcare industry to show their appreciation, National Doctors Day is often celebrated within healthcare organizations themselves. Common traditions include staff-organized lunches where doctors are presented with tokens of gratitude. Historically, a thoughtful gesture involved sending cards and red carnations to physicians and their spouses, and even placing flowers on the graves of those who have dedicated their lives to the profession.
UW Health’s Expression of Gratitude
This year, UW Health is continuing its tradition of gathering notes of gratitude for its more than 2,000 physicians. Patients and loved ones have the opportunity to share their thanks and appreciation through a digital community card available on the UW Health website. These heartfelt messages will be compiled on a single online platform and shared with all UW Health physicians, creating a powerful display of community support. Remember to keep messages appropriate for public viewing and avoid sharing private information.
National Doctors Day serves as a vital reminder of the sacrifices and dedication of those who have chosen a life of service in medicine. Let’s take this opportunity to thank a doctor who has made a difference in your life.
