Bijou Phillips: A Journey of Resilience, Health Battles, and Finding Hope

“I’ve always wanted my life to be as private as I can make it,” Bijou Phillips recently shared with Us Weekly. This desire for privacy is understandable, given her upbringing in the spotlight. Born into a famous family – her father founded the Mamas & the Papas, and her sisters are well-known actresses and singers – Phillips has navigated fame her entire life. More recently, she’s been in the news due to the legal battles of her ex-husband, Danny Masterson. However, she’s now breaking her silence to seek support – for herself and others facing similar challenges.

A Lifelong Health Battle

At 45, Phillips’ health journey has been marked by resilience. Born with underdeveloped kidneys, she spent her first three months on dialysis before recovering with limited kidney function. A transplant at 36, thanks to her friend Chris Wadhams, offered a reprieve. But in February, she revealed a devastating setback: she was back in the hospital and on dialysis again, urgently needing a new donor. “To put my health out there publicly was terrifying,” she admits, “but my friends and family took control and insisted on helping.”

A Powerful Support System

Phillips is surrounded by a loving network of family and friends, including her siblings, boyfriend Jamie Mazur, and longtime pals like Nicky and Paris Hilton, and Kimberly Stewart. They act as her advocates, communicating with doctors and offering unwavering support. Despite the physical challenges – a catheter in her chest preventing showers, and dialysis causing heart rates to soar – Phillips maintains an upbeat and calm demeanor.

Facing Mortality and Raising Awareness

Phillips is using her platform to raise awareness about organ donation and to find peace in facing her mortality. She’s also focused on maintaining a sense of normalcy for her 12-year-old daughter, Fianna. “It’s lovely to see you, and I’m sorry it’s under such sad circumstances. How are you feeling?” she was asked. “I feel pretty good since I started dialysis… I was possibly going to be able to get a kidney from my brother [Aron Wilson], but he wasn’t a match. He’s maybe going to be able to get into the kidney exchange, but they’re not sure. They’ve already denied him once, so he’s gonna try again.”

The Complexities of Organ Donation

The process isn’t straightforward. “If he gives his kidney, it would put me higher on the list. So then I would get the next kidney that’s a match for me,” Phillips explains. Her case is complicated by antibodies that increase the risk of kidney rejection. Remarkably, her public plea has generated an outpouring of support, with over 1,300 people volunteering to be tested as potential donors. “There are 90,000 people in America that need a kidney. It’s something people don’t really understand or talk about.”

Navigating the Healthcare System

Phillips’ experience highlights the challenges of accessing affordable healthcare. She faced coverage denials from SAG-AFTRA during her first transplant, leaving her with a massive bill. This time, she carries multiple insurance policies and Medicare, but still encounters hurdles. “It’s insane that you have to strategize insurance while fighting for your life… There are still medications I need that won’t get approved. They’re unbelievably expensive.”

A Race Against Time

Doctors have indicated that Phillips needs a transplant urgently. Having witnessed her father’s experience with a liver transplant and subsequent dialysis, she understands the risks. “I’m really hopeful, [but] it’s an extremely urgent situation.”

Finding Strength and Spirituality

Despite the challenges, Phillips has found renewed strength and a deeper sense of spirituality. “I have so much more compassion for myself and an ability to really take time to take care of my body and myself… I’ve been praying a lot.” She’s also rediscovered a sense of peace and gratitude. “I’ve been tested my whole life. There have been so many things that have brought me sadness and shame and fear and worry. I had to grow so much. I’ve had to really look at myself [and be] thankful for what I’ve had.”

A Mother’s Love

Her daughter, Fianna, is a source of immense pride and motivation. “She’s the strongest little human… She’s brilliant… She’s very cool, way cooler than me.” Phillips is determined to be there for her daughter, reigniting her fighting spirit. “I’m it. I’m all she’s got.”

A Message of Hope

Bijou Phillips’ story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of organ donation, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. She reminds us to appreciate the beauty of life, even in the face of adversity.
