Iowa Hawkeyes Ready to Rumble: NCAA Tournament Begins Against FDU
IOWA CITY – After a nearly two-week hiatus, the anticipation is building for the No. 2 seed Iowa women’s basketball team as they prepare to kick off their NCAA Tournament journey against No. 15 seed Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) inside the electric Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game, scheduled for 3:00 PM CT on March 21st, follows an earlier matchup between Georgia and Virginia, with the winners of both contests slated to clash on March 23rd in a likely night game.
The Challenge of the Layoff and the Knights’ Strengths
While heavily favored, the Hawkeyes are acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of a long layoff and the challenge posed by a determined FDU squad. The Knights enter the contest riding an impressive 22-game winning streak, showcasing their offensive prowess as a team that ranks 15th nationally in 3-pointers attempted per game (26.6). They won’t hesitate to launch from beyond the arc, a strategy often employed by teams aiming for a monumental upset.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena: A Decisive Home-Court Advantage
However, FDU is stepping into a completely different atmosphere than they’ve experienced all season. The energy and sheer size of the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd represent a significant hurdle. The total attendance of all of FDU’s home games combined barely reaches half the capacity of Iowa’s arena, and their total road attendance only slightly exceeds a single Iowa home game.
Iowa coach Jan Jensen emphasized the importance of this home-court advantage, stating, “It’s just something we’ve never taken for granted…To be able to get a top seed – to be a 2 seed and get to host – I’ve just felt a lot of gratitude.”
Key Players and Battling Through Discomfort
Forward Hannah Stuelke is battling through a lingering elbow injury, but remains determined to make the most of every moment. “Basketball is just here for a short time,” Stuelke said, “so I think just cherishing every moment and pushing through it is what’s best for me.” This tournament also marks the final Carver-Hawkeye Arena run for Stuelke and Kylie Feuerbach, adding an emotional layer to their performance.
Expectations and Early Game Strategy
The Hawkeyes understand the importance of a strong start, especially with several younger players adjusting to the pressure of the NCAA Tournament. Feuerbach noted that playing at home will help them shake off any initial rust, fueled by the energy of the crowd. The goal is to quickly establish a comfortable lead and build momentum.
Game Recap: Iowa Overwhelms FDU
Iowa delivered on expectations, overwhelming FDU and securing a decisive victory to advance to the second round. The final score was Iowa 82, FDU 52. A surprising result in the first round saw Virginia defeat Georgia, denying a potential rematch from 2023.
