Winter Classic 2026: Riders Celebrate Championship & Give Back

The energy was electric at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday as Saskatchewan Roughrider fans gathered to witness their team’s 2026 Winter Classic game. This wasn’t just a friendly competition; it was a powerful demonstration of community spirit, with all proceeds benefiting the Win With Wellness program and Rider Reading – initiatives dedicated to supporting mental health and youth literacy.

A Celebration of the Grey Cup Victory

The atmosphere was particularly charged, fueled by the recent Grey Cup victory. Players and coaches alike emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that so passionately supported them. The presence of the Grey Cup itself added to the celebratory mood, offering fans a rare opportunity to see the coveted trophy up close.

“It’s all about the boys having fun today,” explained Kian Schaffer-Baker, a wide receiver for the Riders and coach in the Winter Classic. “It’s for a great cause, raising awareness and money for mental health, and allowing us to visit schools and read to younger kids. It’s about our fans coming out to appreciate the Grey Cup and celebrate with us.”

Community Support Fuels Rider Momentum

Samuel Emilus, another wide receiver and coach, echoed Schaffer-Baker’s sentiments. “Since winning the Grey Cup, there’s been incredible energy behind every event we do. It’s a direct result of the community support, and it’s only right that we reciprocate that love.”

Friendly Rivalry & Competitive Spirit

The game itself was marked by a playful rivalry between coaches Emilus and Schaffer-Baker. Both coaches admitted to meticulous preparation and a strong desire to claim the Winter Classic trophy. A bit of good-natured trash talk only added to the fun.

“Someone wished me good luck, and I told them they were talking to the wrong person,” Schaffer-Baker joked. “They need to tell that to Sam!”

Emilus responded with a grin, “Schaffer-Baker’s been talking a lot lately, so I had to make sure my team was on point.” Schaffer-Baker then playfully revealed, “I think I heard Sam say something about my mom in French! That was all the motivation I needed to get the boys going.”

More Than Just a Game

The Winter Classic 2026 proved to be more than just a game; it was a testament to the strong bond between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and their fans. It was a day of celebration, community engagement, and a powerful reminder of the positive impact athletes can have when they give back.
