Timothy Weah: Beyond the Pitch – A Symphony of Soccer and Song
U.S. Men’s National Team star Timothy Weah is preparing for Saturday’s friendly against Belgium, a crucial step in his journey towards his second FIFA World Cup this summer. But beyond his prowess on the soccer field, the 26-year-old harbors a hidden talent: a deep passion for music and songwriting, with aspirations of a future career in the music industry.
A Harmonious Blend of Athleticism and Artistry
Recently, Weah showcased his multifaceted personality in a striking New Balance Furon v8 ad campaign. Instead of the typical action shot, the scene featured Weah impeccably dressed in a suit, seated at a grand piano on the pitch, skillfully playing a tune with his cleated feet on the pedals. This unexpected image perfectly encapsulates the duality of his life.
Roots of Rhythm: A Cultural Melting Pot
Music has been an integral part of Weah’s life since childhood. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, with his Liberian father – soccer legend and 1995 Ballon d’Or winner George Weah – and his Jamaican mother, Clar, he was immersed in a vibrant tapestry of cultures and musical styles.
“My love of music came from my Jamaican-Liberian background,” Weah shared with Sports Illustrated. “And just growing up in New York too, it’s a melting pot of cultures and different styles of music, whether that’s salsa, bachata, reggae or Afrobeats. It’s all pretty much my culture. It’s something I grew up on.”
From Violin to Songwriting: A Lifelong Passion
Weah’s musical journey began in middle school, where he had the opportunity to learn the violin and participate in his first band. Now, he collaborates with French artist Fleetzy, exploring his creativity and developing his R&B style. His talent isn’t just a personal pursuit; he was even voted the best singer on his former Juventus team last year!
“Music has been a part of me my whole life, and now I have the pleasure of songwriting with my best friend (Fleetzy), who is a full-time artist, so it’s fun,” Weah added. He even finds ways to integrate music into his soccer career, using it to energize himself before games. “It fits my vibe. It fits my energy, and it gets me going before games.”
A Rising Star on the Field and in the Studio
Since making his senior debut for the USMNT in March 2018, Weah has become a key player, earning 47 caps and scoring seven goals with five assists. He played a pivotal role in the USMNT’s journey to the round of 16 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, scoring the team’s first goal of the tournament against Wales.
Currently on a one-year loan from Juventus to Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1, Weah continues to build his soccer legacy. He previously enjoyed success in France, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain (2017–2018 and 2018–2019) and another with Lille (2020–21).
Timothy Weah is proving that talent knows no bounds, seamlessly blending his athletic achievements with his artistic passions. He’s a true testament to the power of pursuing multiple dreams.
